    Inventory Tracking Software Improvement Project

    FanimeCon’s Convention Operations department required standardized processes and controls for their inventory tracking software. On top of the current web application, new controls were put into place for checkout limitations. To allow for a continuous improvement effort, processes became standardized with a new graphical user interface where user input is recorded. These will provide processing times for further study in proposing redesigned layouts and more efficient processes

    Evidence of ozone-induced visible foliar injury in Hong Kong using Phaseolus vulgaris as a bioindicator

    (1) Background: Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with millions of people exposed to severe air pollution. Surface ozone, mostly produced photochemically from anthropogenic precursor gases, is harmful to both humans and vegetation. The phytotoxicity of ozone has been shown to damage plant photosynthesis, induce early leaf death, and retard growth. (2) Methods: We use genotypes of bush bean Phaseolus vulgaris with various degrees of sensitivity to ozone to investigate the impacts of ambient ozone on the morphology and development of the beans. We use ozone-induced foliar injury index and measure the flowering and fruit production to quantify the ozone stress on the plants. (3) Results: We expected that the ozone-sensitive genotype would suffer from a reduction of yield. Results, however, show that the ozone-sensitive genotype suffers higher ozone-induced foliar damage as expected but produces more pods and beans and heavier beans than the ozone-resistant genotype. (4) Conclusions: It is postulated that the high ozone sensitivity of the sensitive genotype causes stress-induced flowering, and therefore results in higher bean yield. A higher than ambient concentration of ozone is needed to negatively impact the yield production of the ozone-sensitive genotype. Meanwhile, ozone-induced foliar damage shows a graduated scale of damage pattern that can be useful for indicating ozone levels. This study demonstrates the usefulness of bioindicators to monitor the phytotoxic effects of ozone pollution in a subtropical city such as Hong Kong

    Masjid Kowloon: A Case Study of Coexistence Culture in Hong Kong

    Hong Kong is an international city, located in Southern China. It used to be a British colony before 1997. While the British arrived in Hong Kong and developed it as an important seaport in the far East, Islam was believed to have spread in Hong Kong with the arrival of South Asian sailors and soldiers. Islam is not a strange religion to the Hong Kong people; it can be seen in their daily life. In Hong Kong, every people enjoys the right to practice their religion in daily life. However, due to the population structure and cultural homogeneity, people are not really familiar with Islam. Due to the negative footage in the past and an inadequate understanding of Islam, non-Muslims in Hong Kong misunderstood Muslims and caused unnecessary conflicts. The chapter aims to analyze the role of Masjid Kowloon in maintaining religious function and promoting social harmony. The chapter will use historical analysis and textual analysis to show that coexistence culture is possible in the real world, together with the analysis of prerequisites to achieving a harmonic coexistence culture in society

    Construction of regio- and stereoregular poly(enaminone)s by multicomponent tandem polymerizations of diynes, diaroyl chloride and primary amines

    Polyhydroaminations for the synthesis of stable nitrogen-substituted conjugated polymers with welldefined structures remain a great challenge and the control of the regio- and stereochemistry of the enamine product of the hydroamination is non-trivial. Herein we report an efficient tandem polymerization of alkynes, carbonyl chlorides and primary amines to afford regio- and stereoregular conjugated poly(enaminone)s. The atom-economical one-pot sequential polycoupling–hydroamination polymerization catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)2Cl2/CuI proceeded smoothly under mild conditions, furnishing nitrogensubstituted conjugated polymers with high molecular weights (up to 46 100) and high regio-/stereoregularities (100%) in nearly quantitative yields (up to 99%). The single crystal structure of the model compound, together with the NMR spectra comparison of the model compound and polymers provided direct insight into the stereo selectivity of the polymerization, verifying the sole Z-vinyleneisomer of the polymers. Through the exquisite structural design strategy of the intramolecular hydrogen bond of the resulting hydroamination product, the tautomerization between enamine and imine as well as E/Z isomerization was successfully avoided, providing products with high chemical stability and sole Z-vinylene isomers. The conjugated polymers display excellent solubility in common organic solvents, good film forming ability, and high thermal stability. The hydrogen bond formation of the polymer helps to block the potential photo-induced electron transfer process and the polymer shows a unique aggregation enhanced emission phenomenon: their solutions are weakly emissive, while their nanoaggregates or thin films are brightly emissive. Furthermore, thin films of the polymers enjoy high refractive indices (1.9103–1.6582) in a wide wavelength region of 400–1000 nm, which can be further modulated by UV irradiation. Meanwhile, well-resolved fluorescent photopatterns of the polymers can be fabricated through the UV irradiation of thin films via a copper photomask

    Ferrocene-Decorated Hyperbranched Poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene)s: Synthesis, Light Refraction, Photopatterning and Precursor to Magnetic Ceramics

    Ferrocene-decorated hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroycarbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-PTACPs) are prepared in moderate yields with high molecular weights by one-pot polycyclotrimerization of 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenyl bipropiolate with 4-(ferrocenylmethyl)phenyl propiolate in reflux dimethylformamide. All the polymers are soluble and film-forming. They enjoy high thermal stability and lost little of their weight when heated to 300 °C under nitrogen. Thin solid films of the organometallic polymers shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.7038–1.6295) in the wavelength region of 400–1,700 nm. Ceramization of the organometallic hb-PTACPs at high temperature under inert atmosphere gives iron nanoparticles with high magnetizabilities. The organometallic polymers are readily cross-linked under UV irradiation and pyrolysis of the patterned polymer films produces magnetic ceramic patterns with good shape retention

    A mechanistic study of AIE processes of TPE luminogens: Intramolecular rotation vs. configurational isomerization

    Chromophores containing olefinic double bonds are the core components of many important luminogen systems that show the novel photophysical effect of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The role and extent of E–Z isomerization (EZI) of the double bond in affecting the solution emissions of the AIE luminogens (AIEgens), however, have not been fully understood. In this work, we verified the occurrence of EZI in the dilute solutions of TPE-cored AIEgens by NMR spectroscopy using elaborate experimental procedures. We further designed a TPE-fluorescein adduct to quantify that EZI plays a minor role whereas intramolecular rotation plays a major role in the emission quenching processes of the AIEgen solutions. This study fills the gap in the research on the restriction of the intramolecular rotation (RIR) mechanism for the AIE effect and provides a useful tool for the mechanistic investigation of photoluminescence processes

    Effectiveness of interventions for people living with dementia and their carers in Chinese communities: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

    Introduction As the largest and most rapidly ageing population, Chinese people are now the major driver of the continued growth in dementia prevalence globally. The need for evidence-based interventions in Chinese communities is urgent. Although a wide range of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for dementia have been trialled in Chinese populations, the evidence has not been systematically synthesised. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to map out the interventions for people living with dementia and their carers in Chinese communities worldwide and compare the effectiveness of these interventions. Methods and analysis This protocol followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols checklist. We will search Chinese (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang DATA) and English bibliographical databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus, Global Health, WHO Global Index Medicus, Virtual Health Library, Cochrane CENTRAL, Social Care Online, BASE, MODelling Outcome and cost impacts of interventions for DEMentia (MODEM) Toolkit, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews), complemented by hand searching of reference lists. We will include studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions for dementia or mild cognitive impairment in Chinese populations, using a randomised controlled trial design, and published between January 2008 and June 2020. We will use a standardised form to extract data and Version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials to assess the risk of bias of the included studies. Collected data will be fully interpreted with narrative synthesis and analysed using pairwise and network meta-analyses to pool intervention effects where sufficient information is available. We will perform subgroup analysis and meta-regression to explore potential reasons for heterogeneity. Ethics and dissemination No formal ethics approval is required for this protocol. The findings will facilitate the development of studies on interventions for dementia and timely inform dementia policymaking and practice. Planned dissemination channels include peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, public events and websites. PROSPERO registration number CRD42019134135
